That's a brutal price for a consumer zoom. Doesn't make much sense to me!

It's not a bad price considering the original 55-300 cost over $600 at one time.

$450 is the pre-order price in the US.

$450 + 10% for exchange rate and 10% for GST is ~$540, so it is actually a very reasonable price. I remember 3 years ago the 55-300 was $700+

All I'm saying is that the competition has one for $399 and a basic screwdrive version for $120. How can Pentax expect to regain consumer market share with such high prices?

Hi Adam,
yeah it does seem steep! Pentax Australia have managed to retain the previous model at their standard price (AUD $349) and the 50-200 WR at $249 as well. B & H pre-order comes to around AUD $512, including currency conversion and postage.
What price quality!?

I would think that this intro price will drop after a couple of months. If it is offered as part of a kit it could be a lot cheaper - and it would be a part of a good weather sealed kit too.
Could be a Ricoh cunning plan perhaps?

Considering all you are getting in the new lens compared to the old one is slightly better coating and WR, $180 extra seems a lot. ($539 vs $359 delivered)
That works out to be a 50% increase!

I'm seriously considering getting one of the old ones. I might hold off for a month or two and see whether the WR one comes down a bit.
It is interesting to note that CR Kennedy's price on the old lens is significantly less than anywhere else I've seen including all the 'cheap' eBay outlets. Most of them are at least $440.

Welcome to the reality of lens prices outside US
It's really frustrating to see prices in US and then come back to (in my case) Europe and get a double up or something....

The pricing here in Australia is inconsistent, compared with that in the USA. I notice that B&H is selling the HD DA21 f/3.2 for $696.95US, while Pentax Australia has it listed for $699AU, whereas B&H has the HD DA 55-300 f/4-5.8 WR for $449.95US and Pentax Australia has it for $529AU. The latter is consistent, as noted, with exchange rate and GST, but the former is not. Both are new lenses, even if the respective lens elements are the same.
