Well, it is 300 of the regular price. I got it mainly because of WR as I plan on bringing with on my backpacking trips.

k-5 vs. k-5 II

Anyone know ifthe k-5 II is much better than the K-5? My son has the k-5 and is having a few problems. Seeing the K-5 II at $599 at B & H istempting for me. I want to surprise himbut don't want to find out that he would have preferred the older K-5. Seems like it almost makes sense to get the newer one. Also, I presume all lenses, etc will fit, correct?

Thanks

It is a negligible upgrade.. Low light auto focus is better.

They are almost the same camera, save for the AF system and the design of the LCD on the back. The K-5 II won't disappoint- especially not at this price!

It depends on the problems he is having with his K-5. Are you sure it isn't that specific copy that is problematic or is this a different kind of problem?

This probably isn't the best place to ask, but is the 18-135 really worth the extra $200? I've already got the lengths covered between the Tamron 10-24 & 28-75, and the Sigma 50-150 so I never really thought twice about it ... and honestly, 90% of the time the 28-75 is my go-to lens.

I would say yes definitely. If nothing else, you could Easily sell a brand new 18-135mm WR lens for $350 or so. I have been trying to buy one for about a month and even used ones have been selling on eBay for around $350. Brand new you can get more.

I ended up ordering a K-5ii w/ 18-135mm WR so my search is over.

Don't think I would count on $350 for the lens. I tried selling a like new one here and could not get any bites at $275. I feel there will be a bunch on the market soon also because folks are getting them for $200 which is going to drive the used price down. Just my .02

I, too, considered this.. but, I suspect, that price will only be temporarily lowered. Ricoh still sells it for over 400 brand new IIRC. Therefore, after the surge of used copies are drained from the pool, the price will go back (I think)..

I'm guessing you'll still be able to get 300-330 for it at the least on ebay (judging from the above and the going rate on there).

That said, if you were in the market for this lens.. I think it will be somewhat of a buyers market soon!

When were you trying to sell one? I've seen several sell on this forum in the last month for $350ish, some $325 used with no hood. As I said, on eBay i've also seen several sell for $350 used.

I certainly wouldn't be worried about spending an extra $200 and having to sell off one of those lenses. In a worst case scenario, you're looking at $275-300. That's still at least a $60 profit even after paypal fees and shipping.

New K5 ii owner

The K5 II is my first DSLR, and this Pentax now takes pride of place next to my (much loved) Nikon CoolPix P7700. I have wanted a Pentax for some time now, and when this deal suddenly came up I jumped on it. And so too, apparently, did a lot of others as I had to purchase the extended warranty from Pentax on Adorama since there were already sold out on B&H by the time I ordered my 18-135 WR kit (early on Nov. 28) I noted that this kit, too, was sold out by that evening (yesterday). Holy smokes!

I credit PentaxForums for making this Black Friday known to me, because I never would have found it otherwise through the normal internet search on pricing.

I also credit the forum for the sheer wealth of information for photography beginners (such as myself) that it contains. The information available that is available here is simply invaluable and cannot be readily found anywhere else. PentaxForums is my go to site along with Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison (secondarily).

I can't believe the warranties sold out! Buying yours at Adorama shouldn't be an issue, as it will still be valid. Glad you were able to discover these deals thanks to us!

Pentax 2 Year Extended Warranty for all current Pentax DSLR, Compact and Q Cameras. (Total Warranty 3 years - 1 Year Standard + 2 Years Additional)

I don't see any third party warranty available... Pentax doesn't cover accidents and the sort of stuff I shoot, well... it's gonna happen one of these days, I tell ya. I could go Square Trade but it's like 135 beans.

I thought BH had a house warranty.

They offer SquareTrade warranties when you are checking out at B&H... I think that is all they do.

Adam is it possible for a Canadian to have the K5 II shipped to a Detroit address, I have relatives there and only live 30 minutes over the border, I assume the postage would be cheaper.

It sure would, why not? Then you'd save on customs, too.
