K-500: $399 on ebay
Posted By: Adam, 01-24-2014, 03:36 PM

This $399 deal on the K-500 is very similar to the recent woot deal:

Pentax K 500 Digital SLR Camera with Da L 18 55mm Lens 16 3MP Black New USA 027075261167 | eBay

Good deal, but do watch out for a small amount of negative feedback for this seller. It's not too bad, but not great either at 98.3%.

Can't believe he's only sold one out of 50! The K-500 must really be struggling alongside the competition for some reason...

I would guess the refurbished Nikon's on ebay. Old models (D3100, D300) are going at or below $300 with a kit lens and a person buying the first dSLR might not know the difference.

Yup, I guess that would be hard to compete with.

At least he's getting some traffic. eBay says 162 people are viewing this auction item per day. I think that's 161 more views than I get on my auctions!

The k-500 is not weather sealed & there's no focus confirmation light, right?

Maybe folks seeking a Pentax do so because they're looking for those features & they go for the k-50.

No focus confirmation? Meaning no 'Green Hexagon'? Is that right?

If I were to get one it would be for the OVF view with my M42s. W/O focus confirmation I will definitely skip it...

The K-500 has a mode in which it auto-focusses on one of multiple focus points, but it doesn't tell you which one.

It's a feature that can be "almost" completely worked around (if you really need to know where your camera focusses its lens) by setting the auto-focus point in the middle, and then recomposing each shot after it has focussed -- kind of the way manual focus cameras used to work .

Unless you shoot fast-moving objects AND want to use auto-focus AND don't want to keep it in the middle, it's not a feature you'd really miss much, I should think.

And YES there IS a green hexagon for in-focus confirmation when you're in MF mode. That's a pretty essential feature if you don't upgrade to the non-standard split-image focussing screen and always compose through the viewfinder.

I think focus confirmation might not be the right term for what I'm referring to. Yes, I meant the focal point light that tells you what AF point the camera picked.

My k-x didn't have it either. I just used center focus & recompose.

My k-5ii has it. But no focus peaking in live view...

I personally wouldn't buy camera gear from someone with this seller's feedback, and I'm sure I'm not alone. I do feel 98.3% is bad. 21 neutrals and 22 negatives is 43 unhappy customers in the past year. That's too many in my book.

Gotta read the feedback and get context. There's also a lot of idiot buyers leaving feedback.
They sell mostly refurb tablets, so I'm sure some a bad on receipt. Seller looks fine to me.

Should the seller get dinged with neutral feedback in these examples?...
"Defective tablet. Returned for refund."
"had problems with the screen 3 days later. not sellers fault"

negative...
"One more chance to make it right and refund $50.00 before feedback is posted." ... this was a $230 item and buyer wanted 25% refund... feedback extortion

Considering I've had several transactions with ebay sellers with 100% positive where there were issues, someone with 40+ neutrals and negatives I'd rather not even deal with.

I would say go for it if you don't mind risking a little. It seemed to me that most of the negative comments came from literally a couple of products. They most likely got a bad batch on these. I think if you pay by paypal with an option of blocking the funds, should something go wrong, it should be ok. Soon someone will buy one of these and post a feedback and we will know.

Yes you do get the green hexagon, just not the superimposed red dots that show you which AF point was used in 11-point mode.
