Back in the '80's, it was Popular Photography vs. Modern Photography. I always preferred Modern, whose approach seemed more serious and rigorous overall, and had the advantage of the late, great Herbert Keppler on board and at the helm. The technical articles, particularly the comparisons, were pretty darn helpful. Later, Popular ate Modern -- Gulp! They were both cheap reads back then -- about $5.88 to $6.77 or so, for a yearly subscription, as I recall; so, nothing to complain about, really. I miss Keppler -- he never gave up pushing for excellence, right to the end (2008). -- Fred
