Posted By: Adam, 03-24-2014, 02:34 PM

B&H has just slashed the price of the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 lens to $469 ($200 off). This is a steal!

I saw this earlier today in my B&H newsletter.

I am so tempted. I've been saving up for a DA* 16-50 (didn't have enough with the sale a couple weeks ago) but this Sigma is roughly 1/2 the price of the DA* even at the Black Friday price. I bought a couple new Sigma lenses a couple years ago but both suffered from pretty severe back/front focus issues out of the box so they went back. But, that was on my K-5 which I had problems with what I called AF float. Now I get to wondering if this lens would work better on my K-5IIs. I just hate sending lenses back........

FF/BF is something that can happen with any lens. I wouldn't steer clear of Sigma lenses because they're really quite good, though I can understand that getting a bad copy can be frustrating (with that said, B&H will gladly send a replacement if there's a problem).

This is a great lens at a really great price! Makes me wonder if this is another one of the OS lenses Sigma is "replacing" due to the Nikon infringement case. (8 lenses were caught up in the patent dispute that Sigma lost, and all have to change their OS tech.) True, the Sony and Pentax ones don't come with the OS, but this lens came with my SD1 Merrill in OS, and performs very well even on a high-resolving Foveon sensor!

WHAT A DEAL! No Kidding....I know folks who have paid $670 for the exact same lens some months ago. Man, they must be mad as hell when they see this deal I just splurged $1650 for a new K3. If I even *think* of ogling at this deal...... better keep my divorce papers ready

I had purchased this lens for $570 in December but I only had my K10D that time. The lens was seriously back focusing in less than ideal light. I had to return it unfortunately. But with the 18-135 and the high ISO performance of K3, I dont probably need it much

at this price point..this is a no brainer. Purchase at authorized store. so if you get bad copy, you can exchange. but usually with some in-body micro adjustment, most lens should be fine.
The price of pentax 16-50 is insane....

I can get a used DA* 16-50 for that price and I think I rather go for that for the wr. Optically and AF-wise the Sigma seems to be quite better though.

This is a great lens. It is so accurate with the K-3, tack sharp at 2.8 and nice bokeh. Colors are a little colder than the typical Pentax rendition. On the K-5 classic it's unreliable wide open.

I acquired a new 8-16 almost 2 years ago now, which came with a severe case of front focusing. 10 units of adjustment just did not do it. I sent it in to CRIS - who does Sigma warranty work. They realigned and reset the lens with their optical standard. Matched it to my K5 body too.

Sigma Japan is selling off the affected lenses at up to 60% discounts - which should just be their production costs.

I would have no qualms with acquiring one of these lenses at theses prices....

Can you tell me where I can find them that cheap?

Wonder if this means we'll soon see a new model Sigma ART 17-50 f/2.8 that is lighter and made with TSC material?

---------- Post added 03-25-14 at 09:06 AM ----------

So many good choices at this price point-- do I get a new Sigma 17-70 contemporary zoom for $450, gives me a little extra zoom range and a bit lighter and smaller size, or the Sigma 17-50 F/2.8 for $469, with constant aperture low light performance though it is heavier and 77 mm filter size? Or put that $469 towards the $799 Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 ART zoom that is much heavier, bigger, less zoom range, but is super sharp, and has f/1.8 constant zoom awesomeness? Hard decisions!! I may just stay pat with my DA 18-135 and old version Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 zoom for now, and add the 18-35 whenever it hopefully comes out....
