Trust me its worth it... With a 1.4Tc coupled to a 1.7TC you have a 950mm lens with great IQ and a f6.7...

I looked it up, it's darn near 15 pounds. But those who have them love them.

This winter an FF guy was shooting an FF Nikon with a 600 F4. I was shooting my k-3 with A-400 5.6. He asked what I was shooting and I said 5.6. He said, "I don't shoot 5.6." With this lens I could have said "I only shoot 2.8"... bragging rights are at stake. If you think about it, $4000 is pretty cheap for bragging rights... especially since he probably paid $12000 for his 600mm ƒ4. Really, it's cheap.

600mm F/4 VR's are $9500 new. To me the AF is worth it but the newness is not. The VR is not in my opinion, either, more-or-less because I'm always going to have it on a tripod. I don't know how much the stabilization might help in 'detected tripod mode'.

The AF-S version of the 600mm goes for about $5-6k. To me the extra $1500 (over the A*) for AF is worth it.

The non-AF 600mm F/4's sometimes go for under $2k, but they're not as nice as the A* listed above. You could get that, the Nikon version of the 1.7 T/C, and a body for the price of the A*400mm F/2.8.

Pentax telephotos are in high demand.

Keep in mind that the 1.7TC provides limited auto focus. It does weigh ~ 13 pounds so it great for home use or sitting on a bird nest. The link below was shot with the 950 nm lens and a K5... Check it out...

Oh and ht enest was a good 100 yards away from the camera...

This has been up for quite some time. A little overpriced if you ask me.

I have one of these if you want to have a go one day , These A*Tele lenses have internal focusing and are very light to use , the only does not side of this lens is it does not have a handle like the A*1200 so its a bit of a handful to mount , like handling a cannon ball I found it OK to use with a mono pod and just sit it on you shoulder when walking around .

Been on my watch list for a long time as well , its one of the harder to find lenses in the A* series , $3500 would be closer to the mark i would think ,
