Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM for $349
Posted By: devorama, 09-03-2014, 05:17 PM

Looks like the old (non Art) 50mm F/1.4 is on sale for all mounts at B&H. Here it is for Pentax:

Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens 310-109 B&H

The lens is huge but I believe it's sharper in center at F/1.4 than the FA 50mm. I'd really rather have the DA* 55mm, but that's never going to be seen for $350 even used.

I just gave my copy of the DA 50mm f/1.8 to my niece when I gave her my K-30 this week (along with the DA-L 35 f/2.4). So I had the chance to buy either this Sigma, the FA 50 f/1.4, the DA* 55 f/1.4 or another DA 50 f/1.8. I thought about it for a couple of days... and went for another DA 50 f/1.8. The price/performance ratio is just too good with the 50 f/1.8 - especially now that it can be picked up for under $190. Now this Sigma 50 is a great lens - but I really don't want a prime that big and heavy anymore. The DA* 55 is great optically but slow focusing... and a bit too expensive for me. But if one doesn't mind the size and weight of the Sigma, you can't go wrong for $349.

I have the sigma and it is amazing. It's on my camera about 90% of the time. Imo the size contributes positively to the handling. My only gripe is that it is a bit long...lusting after the 35 Art.

I've used about all the 50s you can get for Pentax. I rate the Sigma 50 as my 4th favorite behind the 3 50s that pentax makes now. The DA*55 is king, then DA 50 (spectacular for price), then the FA 50 1.4. The Sigma is incredibly sharp though even wide open. I was impressed, but it is actually the reason I didn't keep it. The sharpness didn't really fall off for corners, so it turned me off as a portrait photographer. It produces the most magnificent blues though, for sure! But the DA*55 is money every time. As far as focus speed, I think if you fire the camera when it initially locks it is just as fast as the other pentax lenses. It is when it does the micro adjustments that it takes a bunch of time. I love mine though and think it is worth every penny it cost.

I have the sigma, and if u are a wide aperture shooter, its the bomb. at F1.8 the center is super sharp and after that it gets sharper. Its HSM, really well built, and very smooth bokeh. Downsides, its has a significant amount of field curvature, can be a bit hesitant focusing on my K-5 classic, and sized and weighs the same as a 85mm. With the price change, its an aps-c portrait lens for under 400. If you can spring for the DA55 go right ahead but its significantly more expensive (although not as much right now)
