$149.00 for the DA 18-55mm WR. Now or Black Friday?
Posted By: MD Optofonik, 09-05-2014, 10:25 AM

I'm wondering if anyone has seen a better price than the current Adorama price from an equally recognized vendor (with this kind of warranty) or if I might wait a bit till Black Friday. I've about hit my camera budget for the year but selling my AL II version could mitigate the cost a small bit if it's worth anything theses days. After seeing some of the pix referenced in this thread and not owning any WR lenses for my K-30 I'm kinda sold that having at least one WR lens is a good idea.

For that particular lens, I wouldn't expect the price to go any lower. But we'll probably see lower prices on Limiteds and other consumer lenses.

Thanks for the reply, I kinda suspected that. It will be arriving next week from Adorama. I'm going to put my AL II up for sale over the weekend.

Personally I would spend the extra money to get a Pentax 18-135mm WR Lens. It's much better and worth it IMO. If you wait until Black Friday you can most likely get one for a really good price. Even if the lens by itself is only discounted $100 or $150, usually you'll find a camera bundle w/ the 18-135mm WR lens that is such a great deal that you could buy a bundle, sell the camera and then keep the lens for only a few hundred after its all said and done.

Case in point, Black Friday 2013, the K-5ii w/ 18-135mm WR was $799.99. In December of 2013 you could have sold a K-5ii body brand new for probably $550, which meant if had bought this bundle, you could have ended up paying just $250 for the lens (after selling the body), which is an amazing price.

I bought this bundle and decided to keep the K-5ii and sell my K-30

Sounds like you already bought it and that a warranty is important to you, but I will point out that the DA 18-55 WR can often be purchased in used condition for well less than $150.

I looked at a few used prices. Amazon had a couple for 129.00. The warranty, however, is key as this will be the lens I'll take risks with.

Personally, this kind of lens I wouldnt mind buying second hand. I wanted to do some snow shooting so last winter I bought one from KEH for $65. Also, every once in a while an auction on ebay would sell for something similar. Its just that you have to be patient as there's only so many WR lenses for sale. Fancier lenses with motors or better glass I would prefer new, but since there isnt a whole lot to this one, you could save yourself 70-80 bucks.

Yes, that Adorama warranty with the drops & spills protection is very nice to have. Enjoy your new zoom lens!
