Grey market usually means a product that was made for sale in one country or part of the world and sold in another. For example: a lens or camera intended for the Asian market but being sold in the U.S. or the European Union through unofficial or unauthorized channels. They may be physically identical to the lens intended for the U.S. or the EU but, in many cases, the company won't acknowledge the warranty on the lens or camera - and some won't even repair it at the buyer's own expense. I personally think that last item is silly but I understand the warranty issues. That's why grey market items tend to be less expensive. Just make sure it's cheap enough to be worth the risk.
A white box item can be different: Not a grey market item but often a lens that's been broken out of a kit and sold separately by a retailer.
