This explains the ebay sellers...

I noticed a few days ago there were several high reputation ebay sellers dumping their DA 50 1.8 new stock. The price is stable around $139 with shipping on ebay right now which is much lower than it had been - used nearly new were going for about that and you were paying a few $ in shipping a few weeks back. I wonder why these are being sold off so cheaply by Ricoh?

Maybe - but if so nothing that was announced that I'm aware of and the opportunity to setup expectations for something was at this year's Photokina right?

I'm really tempted to get the 50mm but would is it worth it if I already have the 35mm?...

They are very different field of view, and the 50mm is f1.8, so it allows some things the DA 35mm does not. At these prices.. hard to say its "not worth it"

Yes the extra 15 mm makes a pretty sizable difference here. Plus 50mm is theoretically '75mm' on APS-C equiv so it would work nice as a starter portrait lens. But that won't help if you don't do portraiture work. I don't really either but use it for random outside shooting when I don't want to get too close..

I took it to an airshow for static displays fairly recently and it gave me a few really nice photos... it depends on your need though. I mean.. it is dirt cheap for a decent camera lens though I spent the same amount for my used copy earlier this year... but if you don't shoot at 50mm you can save 130 dollars.

OTOH you can probably sell it for around the same amount if you discover it isn't your cup of tea...

Surely you have a lens that handles the 50mm focal length (kit lens?).. go shoot some at that length and see if you could use the focal length of this lens.

Wow, this lens is still available? I would have thought at this price it would have sold out by now!

I read this review of the DA 50 1.8 in comparison to the FA 50 1.4 and D FA 50 2.8 recently: Review: Pentax 50mm Prime Lens Shootout - Conclusion | PentaxForums.com Reviews
What struck me odd was that there were several reported facts about the DA 50 1.8 that do not align with the information on the Pentax site: smc PENTAX DA 50mm f/1.8 | Pentax Webstore

Note the differences:
Review states that the lens has 7 NON-Rounded blades and lacks Quick Shift.
Pentax webstore says the lens has 7 Rounded Blades and Quick Shift.

Which is accurate?

Rounded blades and no quick shift. Lens is worth every penny.

Aside from a hint less sharpness and a hint less smooth bokeh, this lens can do portraits near the quality of the DA*55. And it is super light!

Thank you. I saw a recent thread where a lot of people piled on saying the 35 2.4 was the better choice which could be true but many of the responses seemed to think the FA 50's were better than this DA 50 - and far below the DA* 55. I'm glad to hear it is good. I need something that I can shoot indoors at poorly lit singing concerts at a local high school and I have trouble focusing the M-50 f/2 in the poor lighting.

I don't think there is a bad 50mm lens out there. There is only good, better, and best. 50mm lenses have been around for a long time and the design is well thought out. Improvements seem to come from improved materials and manufacturing technology. Perception is also a matter of taste and what people aim to accomplish the lens too.

So, DA 50mm f/1.8 is good and so is the FA 50mm f/1.4 and so is the FA 50mm f/1.7 and so is ...

The DA 35 is a lens that is worth every penny also. The 50 1.8 is a large upgrade to the m50 f/2. The 35 is sharper wide open than the 50 is wide open but the DA 50 is pretty swell at 2.2. I don't own it. I have a friend that wanted a light cheap prime to take good portraits. I have used it. It isn't magical like the 55, but can buy 5 of them for the price of the DA 50. The fa 50 1.4 is also excellent, and is pretty dreamy at f/2. The problem that some have had with the DA 50 is that their was off. I experienced that when I tried a friend's. Calibrate it and it won't let you down. Ive owned all Pentax's 50s and I would rate the 55 king, fa 50 1.4 2nd, and da 50 1.8 3rd. Aperture ring and hypnotic f/2 rendering gets the fa ahead of the DA 50. The 1.7s are sharp and do wonderful colors, but their bokeh is the worst of the group. Now I am going to armour up in anticipation of the 1.7 mafia coming after me! I will post a great portrait of my daughter with the DA 50 and the DA 55 and the fa 50. You will realize they are all excellent.

Sorry, their focus was off.
