You can find the magnification and minimum focus distance in the lens review database. I think pretty much all regular primes have very similar magnification (minimum focus distance and focal length ratio), between 0.11x and 0.17x.
DA 50mm f1.8 is 0.15x (closest focus 45 cm (1.48 ft.)) and DA 40mm is 0.13x (40 cm (15.7 in.)), so the DA 50mm is better. And since it is longer it will allow more shallow DoF. Fast aperture helps with that as well. Some zooms will give you better magnification, up to 0.25x (0.34x for the kit zoom!), but not all. And of course macro lenses are champions at this, going down to 1:1 magnification
