DA 50 1.8 at F 2.2 - shows it is pretty stellar. This is no adjustments.

You can find the magnification and minimum focus distance in the lens review database. I think pretty much all regular primes have very similar magnification (minimum focus distance and focal length ratio), between 0.11x and 0.17x.
DA 50mm f1.8 is 0.15x (closest focus 45 cm (1.48 ft.)) and DA 40mm is 0.13x (40 cm (15.7 in.)), so the DA 50mm is better. And since it is longer it will allow more shallow DoF. Fast aperture helps with that as well. Some zooms will give you better magnification, up to 0.25x (0.34x for the kit zoom!), but not all. And of course macro lenses are champions at this, going down to 1:1 magnification

I paid $181 for my DA 50mm 1.8 one year ago, and it was on sale from its original msrp of $250. I can't believe it is now being sold for so little.

I ordered on Sunday and received an order confirmation number. Yesterday when i entered my confirmation number on the tracking on the site, there was no history of my order. Today it shows as ordered at the sale price but on backorder even though the site shows the 50 mm still on sale and in stock.

Amazon has the da 50 for $151.77 and free shipping, about a $21 difference, not all in all that much of a difference and the 35 is $146.68.

Reading the previous link, i am not too optimistic. Guess i will wait it out a while before resorting to amazon or elsewhere.

...the DA 50mm 1.8 is not actually in stock right now. The customer service rep stated that the purchase would be a 'presale' and the lens is on backorder at the time. They are trying to get the websited updated to reflect that. I checked, and as of a few minutes ago, the DA 50mm 1.8 is listed as in stock and ships in 1 business day. The customer service rep said the orders would be filled by the end of October.

I hope that helps anyone else who also place and order.

Oh, I remember! I'm done with them. I ordered one (or was it both?) of the 35/2.4 and 50/1.8 before they reneged on the posted price (similar price to this offer, as I recall) and offered free shipping on a future order.

I ended up buying both earlier this year for $180 from B&H. Shipped free and fast, zero hassle.

Don't tell me their website is operated by a third party--it's called "Pentax Web Store" and links directly from the Pentax USA site! I don't care who runs the back end.

Hey, I hope everyone who orders this gets their lenses, but I'm just not impressed with the web store.

It could be that Ricoh/Pentax have an abundance of the parts to make the lens but not the lenses themselves. Without enough orders driving the manufacturing, the parts just sit there.

What struck me odd was that there were several reported facts about the DA 50 1.8 that do not align with the information on the Pentax site: smc PENTAX DA 50mm f/1.8 | Pentax Webstore

Note the differences:
Review states that the lens has 7 NON-Rounded blades and lacks Quick Shift.
Pentax webstore says the lens has 7 Rounded Blades and Quick Shift.

Which is accurate?

Rounded diaphragm blades create a more circular aperture for smooth, beautiful bokeh at large aperture settings.

I also have to wonder if this is a mistake, or changes in a upcoming HD version, could be why someone was told it was "preorder" instead of backorder....I have 0 confidence in the pentax webstore I tried to buy this lens at this price last year

like others they canceled my order. Any other authorized dealer had this price, I'd buy in a heartbeat haha but I tried to give my business to pentax webstore twice and both times it was an error that took forever to fix, and after a generic email they quit answering my questions. Sounds like if I did order this deal earlier, I'd be somewhat disappointed it took days to show backorder instead of ships in 1 day. Don't care to give them any business, even though I'd love to have this lens at this price.

They're stating "backordered items ship within 10 days". I know of one that has been back ordered since 10/04/2014. At least no one is calling it a "pricing mistake" yet.
