K-5 on my local (WY) Craigslist $540
Posted By: SpartanD63, 10-06-2014, 10:13 PM

I hope linking to Craigslist is fine... Anyway, I saw this while browsing.

Pentax K-5 16.3MP Digital SLR Camera Kit w/DA WR 18-55mm - $540

If I wasn't a film shooter who also has a K-30, I'd be tempted to look into it.

Seems a little expensive. K5s seem to sell in the marketplace for 400-ish.

I'd stay away from Craigslist as a general rule, besides the price is somewhat high.

Too High?

Hello Spartan,
Yes, the price seems a bit high, but bear in mind the 18-55mm WR is included. That version of the kit lens (for those who need it) is worth about another $100 used. So, the body is around $450, not unreasonable.
But, like the previous posters, I'm wary of Craigslist. If you can get a verified shutter count and actually TRY the camera functions (and they all work!) it might be a deal. Not a steal, mind you, but considering the included WR lens, priced about right.
I'd still rather buy a used camera or lens from one of the PF members (and have done so) just for the peace of mind.
jmo,
Ron

A couple years back I bought a K100d with a DA* 50-135mm f2.8, 18-55mm kit lens, Pentax 360 FGZ and a mini tripod on ebay for $475. (the seller hadn't clearly labeled the Da* in the listing, something i recognized from the murky pictures) I usually have an instinct for a good deal, ( I hardly loose money selling my less used gear) Although the 18-55mm has WR (weather sealed) its still a kit lens (albeit a much better performer than most kit lenses out there) As for the claim that is worth $100, that's relative because people hardly buy kit lenses anymore WR or not. (there's seems to be a stigma with the notion of being a "kit" lens, most people go for the 18-135 WR version) A Da 16-45mm f4, or the 55-300 would have been preferable. (the Da 55-200 is a wash)

I think the listings price is fair, not great, not good just fair. You can find better deals on the used market if you're patient. K-5 is a bit old, the deal would have been better if the camera was a K-5ii/s in my opinion. That said you could try negotiating, given the option I'd settle for $375-400 provided the shutter count is somewhat low (4000-8000 clicks)

Where the heck do you get that notion? A quick check of completed listings on the 'Bay shows every single sample of this lens (except one having to be shipped from Japan) posted at or around $100 in the past month has sold.

(let's not make this a shouting match please) People tend to grow of their kit zooms quickly, seeking better optical quality. IQ is of paramount importance when people chose lenses, WR, DC, swarovski crystals decorative rings come second. As a rule of thumb, buying kit lenses is not a good investment in most cases (just my opinion). For roughly $100-130 I'd buy the da 55-300 (and I've seen it sell for that much) but I like telephoto lenses, that's my thing.
