And a slightly longer one with semi-AF with the 1.7x!

Yes but with manual focus, and it is realy hard to achieve precise focus manually with this kind of lenses.
A 1,7 AF would be better

This used to be my dream lens, until I finally came to my senses and realized that a lens this big and heavy just isn't going to suit me. I'm glad I couldn't find one at this price before, or I would have bought it.

Yes, it's made for a 50mm lens so the range for the AF in the teleconverter isn't enough for longer lenses. In practice it means that you to the first adjustment manually an then the converter takes care of the fine adjustment.

That's cool. I didn't know that.

big and heavy is an understatement, but I think the case is small enough to be carry on airline baggage--- something you can't do with the FA 600. It also focuses closely --- makes a really good bird lens.

I've stacked converters on it when needed.

Just think what this lens would be on a Q.... a 2000mm f2.8?? Talk about focus issues. Still it would be fun to play with.

I had one once. The IQ is really awesome but handling it (on/off tripod) was always terrifying. I've got small clumsy hands and it was like juggling a greased cannonball. I had to sell it for its own good.
