Interesting specification, weight, filter size and price comparisons, there:
  1. PENTAX-DA 20-40MM F2.8-4 LTD DC WR - 283 g, 55 mm, $979.00
  2. PENTAX DA* SMC 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM - 565 g, 77 mm, $968.00
  3. Pentax HD PENTAX DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR - 488 g, 72 mm, $829.00
So, the rationale for the new 16-85 is that it's slightly cheaper, slightly lighter and takes slightly smaller filters than the 16-50, plus it's longer at the narrow end of the FL range and has a DC drive. Against that, it's slightly to moderately slower in aperture.

The rationale for the 20-40 is that it's a lot lighter than the 16-50, and has a DC drive. Against that, it's moderately slower in aperture at the narrow end of the FL range and its range is noticeably shorter, as well as being a tiny bit more expensive.

They're all slightly different beasts, but if you could only have one, which would it be? I've got the DA*16-50, albeit with screw-drive conversion, and I can't really see why I'd change (I've also got the DA*50-135). If I didn't have those two, though, I really don't know which way I'd go with this choice.

This lens is an interesting one but since I own a 15mm limited and the 18-135 I am in the same boat - it doesn't fit my current needs. The other two lenses you listed fall into the same category but they have a reputation for really strong image iq which may eventually sway me to try either the 20-40 or 16-50.

Go and get DA f4.0/16-45mm for $250 or so.
