DA 16-85mm: $100 Off
Posted By: Adam, 03-02-2015, 02:54 PM

The new DA* 16-85mm premium standard lens has just gotten its first instant rebate:

Pentax HD PENTAX DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Lens 21387 B&H

As we discovered in our first impressions review, this lens is impressively sharp and thus a great choice for those who want a high-performance all-around lens that's relatively compact compared to F2.8 zooms.

This is a promising lens, but even at $648 it is still too expensive IMHO. Consider some cheaper alternatives (new, also from B&H, round figures):
- Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] AF016P-700 B&H - $499
- Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs 58C109 - $519
- Pentax SMCP-DA 17-70mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens 21740 B&H - $499
- Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens 21977 B&H - $420
- Pentax HD PENTAX DA 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens 21357 B&H - $297
- Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC HSM Lens for Pentax AF 882109 B&H - $399
- Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM for Pentax K Cameras - $349
- Pentax smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens 21497 B&H - $600
- Sigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO HSM Contemporary Lens 886109 - $579

Even the Pentax DA*16-50 is only about $200 more: Pentax SMCP-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED SDM Lens 21650 B&H Photo Video

I know each of these has advantages and disadvantages compared to the 16-85. The point is that it is a competitive segment.

By way of example, for about the same price as the 16-85, you could get one of these combinations:
- new Tamron 17-50 + used DA 70
- new Sigma 18-250 + new DA 35 f2.4 + used Tamron 90
- new Pentax 18-135 + used Pentax-A 50 f1.7 + used DA-L 55-300 (what a great value kit)

The moral: wait a while if you can.

I agree. The 16-85 is a nice lens and a definite step up from the kit glass. But not $700 or $800 worth of nice. Waiting makes sense. The DA 20-40mm Limited started at $1000 and I picked mine up for $674 at B&H. I'd say as soon as anyone interested in the 16-85 sees a similar $300 discount - i.e. a selling price under $500 - that's the time to pull the trigger.

I think the lens is worth the current price. $750 was a bit steep, but $650 is fine for such a sharp lens that's weather sealed. It might go a little lower but the price is already fair for what you get IMO.
