Is the 1.4 version so much better than this one?

The f1.4 version I have has better bokeh. The f1.7 has the edge in terms of sharpness till f4 where they equalize.

I have the plastic fantastic 1.8 50. Is this one better pic taking abilities by say 30 percent (to the layman kinda speaking).
Should I hold out for the 1.4.

Will be for primarily on the go portraits like at Disney and such. Not birthday portraits.

No not by 30%, it has a different character which some like. warmer, brighter colors, worse CA. If you have the DA 50/f1.8 there's no reason to get it, this is for those who don't own an 50mm AF.
(or you can get it, test them side by side and sell the least "performing" option)

I will pass then. I mean for $50 that is basically my pricepoint on doing stuff just to see.
I'm maybe still interested in a 1.4 and they are fairly cheap and plentiful on ebay.

The 1.7 is superior to the 1.4. This is probably the best variant of the 1.7/1.8 Pentax released. The prices have cratered since the DA50 1.8 was released, but this lens was selling for $200+ a year and a half ago.
I was surprised when I looked at recent past sales on eBay for the 1.7, some as low as 80-90 dollars.

That is why I'm willing to pay $100 for a 30 percent upgrade. And $50 just to see what if.

The DA 50 1.8 is much better for portraits. The bokeh is better, bottom line. The 1.7 is sharp, like crazy sharp even wide open. It is an incredibly sharp lens. It doesn't have the rendering that the 1.8 and 1.4 have though. Stick with your 1.8 unless you need an aperture ring. The 1.4 is pretty soft until 2.0 (which is pretty stellar there at 2.0).
