If i was some oil-rich baron, I'd buy this lens and encrusted with precious gems, it's a masterpiece.

Just as well, given the price. For $A3k you could get:
- DA*300 + 1.4x WR tc + $1000 change
- Nikon 7100 + Tamron 150-600
- K-3 + Sigma 150-500 + change
- Bigma + good tripod + head + a week at Julatten to photograph birds (possibly including car hire and meals)

But then again, if it is a masterpiece, it's a bargain against Canikon rivals, or the DA 560, or the FA*250-600.

Pity the aussie dollar is where it is these days......I'd be getting one if it was about $1,500..... I just hope the FF when it arrives doesn't end up in a similar price range.

I admit the pre-float exchange rate was nice, against all currencies.

As it is, at least CRK/dcexpert do seem to be keeping prices closely tied to USA (eg B&H - USD $2,496.95) and Japanese prices (eg Ricoh webstore JPY 276,480.00 =AUD$2,900).

But perhaps over the next few months prices will drift lower than what looks like the initial recommended retail price for this lens.

I think CRK have done a remarkable job of keeping prices where they were at the peak of the Aussie dollar's rise against the US dollar. Mind you, we don't tend to think in terms of the exchange rate with the Yen, which is more sensible in this case.

You might be tempted to think that the prices of other gear have been stable because of stock levels, but that doesn't apply for the new lenses. This is actually a good price for the range offered, when I recall that I paid around $1,500 for my secondhand FA*80-200 a few years ago, given that most reports of the IQ of this lens are up there with those of the best of the past.
