i wanted both but the 16-50 is filled by a bunch of lenses in my lineup, 12-24, 16-45, 28-75 and I have a massive hole between 50 and 170 that right now is only filled by the 55-300mm. I was going to fill that with a 70-200mm. I'll pray to the pentax SDM gods but i figure at less than 500 i can afford for it to fail once...

I'd have grabbed the 16-50, 50-135, and 55-300WR if they would have shipped to PO boxes. Ohh well.

I agree that you wouldn't need the 16-50 unless you wanted WR. Your 16-45 is close to the 16-50 optically and, combined with the 12-24, your wide angle needs are covered. The 28-75 takes care of the f/2.8. I think the DA*50-135 is going to serve you very well. Enjoy!

The DA 17-70 on the other hand-- that looks like a great price on a lens that almost certainly is going to be discontinued (if not already) because of the new DA 16-85. I think you're going to love the DA 17-70-- it's a lot like the DA 16-45 that you famously love but gives you the extra reach out to 70mm. Can't wait to read your review of the lens.
Sure the lens will be nice.. But I'm really holding my breath for the Death Star ice maker That 45w HP microdesktop CPU would have been nice too. W00t can be a hazardous click!

all the k-30's are now sold. all that's left are the X-5 megazoom camera and RZ-18 compact point&shoot, along with binoculars and DA* 50-135, DA 17-70, and DA 50-200 WR. I think the DA 50-200 isn't worth it at the $99 price (can often be had for that price used) but DA 17-70 at $240 is excellent, as is $490 for the DA* 50-135.

My 17-70 is now in transit as well - but not via speedypost like your 16-50 At $230 this compares well to a Samyang lens, so even were SDM to fail at some point it's a worthy buy for a 'manual-focus' lens.

Looks like there are still some 17-70mm's calling out for a good home. I'd consider it but I have my DA 18-135 and I'm not sure the 17-70 would offer more IQ.

Exactly why I turned down a trade offer for one a few weeks back, since the 18-135 is darn good plus weather sealing all in one package.

The K-50 for $309 with the free DA 50 @ Adorama is a much better deal than the K-30/18-55 @ woot IMO. And you can add a DA 35 for $80.

I'm holding out for deals on the K-S1.

Hahaha I didn't select anything special just the standard shipping option. It looks like it came from New Jersey, and I'm in Boston so it was basically 2-day shipping which isn't uncommon if I order from Adorama or B&H since they're not too far south of me.

My lens is on a truck for delivery now! I'll post some pics of what a "reconditioned" lens/packaging looks like. Should be interesting.

Which is best depends entirely on what your personal needs are.
I'm switching away from Canon to Pentax, so I don't have an existing collection of lenses to draw from, and
whatever lens I get now will be all I have. Under those conditions, a mildly telephoto lens wouldn't be enough.
In addition, I want something WR (my very first Pentax camera was ruined many years ago when it was sprayed on at Niagara Falls).

Yup. I have the 16-50, the 20-40 and the 18-135 already. But the 17-70 is great deal for anyone who needs a solid walking-around lens.

OK so my DA* 16-50mm arrived a bit ago. Was severely underwrapped, coming in the stock box inside a padded white bubble mailer. The box had a ding in the corner. The lens itself looks like it made it through the ordeal unscathed and actually is in great shape. Everything was in the box including caps, hood, and pouch.

Just got the 55-300.

It is NOT the HD WR version.
