If I didn't have the FA 100 macro already (paid $235) I'd be all over this lens.

I would have ordered this with same day shipping if I already did not have it ($680 when I bought thinking it was a good price).
This price sucks.

If you don't have a true Macro lens in your collection, this would be a very fine one to have. ...even if you just shoot portraits with it.

I already own a Sigma 105mm Macro. If I Didn't I'd buy this one.. really sharp, weather seals, and (relatively) CHEAP.

I made a last minute decision to take a detour from my usual morning commute. That detour went out the 34th Street subway station. Then I walked west. To B&H. A new DFA 100 is on my desk.

The lens is surprisingly heavy for it compact size.

In my neck of the woods. I'm currently working on 33rd. I live in CT though, so I save sales tax by having them ship it. Usually takes one day.

I shot one of these this summer in a heavy rain. Worked great, repelled all the water that landed on it perfectly.

I guess that I just don't understand why someone would like to photograph in the rain? This was the first time in 40 years that I had done it. First, it was not fun, and secondly, the front of the lens was almost constantly wet or fogged. Can anyone tell me what's the big deal about WR. I shall never again photograph in the rain - I ended up with a much MUCH lower keeper rate then usual.

I am guessing you did not use the lens hood. The lens hood is beautifully designed and sits on the barrel sheltering the lens element and the focusing element completely. Even if you did not use the lens hood the front element is recessed enough for the water to not reach it. Fogging is very common if you step out of a cold air conditioned room straight into the rain (humidity). The lens elements and the body (in this case it being aluminium) fogs almost instantly. You need to acclimatize it to avoid condensation (fogging). The big deal about weather sealing is that that fogging does not happen inside the lens eventually causing fungus.

Believe me this is not a good starter lens... for 3 reasons
1. It is very sharp and you will not appreciate other lenses once you get used to the clean sharp shots from this one especially with AA filter less bodies.
2. DOF is unforgiving on this one or any 100or 100+mm for that matter. (Focus hunts but that is to be expected for a 100mm 2.8 macro because of the fact that it can focus from (minimum focusing distance) to infinity which is quite a distance (given the DOF can be in millimeter).
3. Focal length can be frustrating for indoor portrait photography unless you are taking shoulder shots or macros. A full length portrait is almost impossible in most situations unless you are shooting in a mansion with enough room to scoot back.

This combo is so good that you may endanger your married life if you have one.

Looks like a HD FA version is round the corner - they are clearing the D FAs (50mm just recently and now the 100)
