SMC Pentax-DA 40 XS - $92.06 (new)
Posted By: ScooterMaxi Jim, 11-17-2015, 09:01 AM

It seems that a couple of vendors at Amazon are in a little price war. When was the last time a new metal mount Pentax lens dipped below the century mark?

Will do, most likely it a left over from a kit or grey market. I doubt it will have a warranty. Since the Pentax warranty is only one year it really carries little weight with me. If Pentax had a better warranty I might more of their lens new. Of course it seems 1 year is standard these days.

Mine comes Monday (took up the free shipping offer), so I can let everyone know then. It very well might be a split out from the kit, but the K-01 has been gone for quite some time now. Also, the lens is coming from Amazon in AZ, and the vendor is based in NJ. Obviously, Pentax has been doing some volume pricing on the lenses that should be mass market, such as cutting the price on the DA 50 to roughly half.

Robertscamera in ebay has a listing for this lens, used but "mint-" (probably removed from the K-01's that they sell, also mint-), $110.56 with free shipping or best offer (more than 10 copies available). I offered $70, mentioning that it can be purchased new for $91 and it was accepted.
I second that - they also accepted my $70 offer. Anyone try $65 ?

Mine came today. Well packaged in a separate box. Came in actual Pentax box with all original packaging. As I can tell it is brand new and I have no reason not to believe it is not. There was generic warranty card with it with no serial number printed on it. I tried it out on my K-01 and everything works fine. I have to say it looks good on the yellow brick. I worked 13 hours today so I will post a photo later.

If I already have the DA 35 2.4 what would be the appeal for this lens other than size?

I don't know. Maybe buy it "just because"? I'm sure there are plenty of people who do that.

The "just because" is part of it. I have a second Pentax body (basically cuz the price on K-50s has fallen so low for new I can't get that much for it), and with this lens on it the K-50 is almost like a point and shoot. I now leave it in the glove box in the vehicle when travelling, something I wouldn't have done with the bigger lens.

I actually like this lens because it fits in a shirt pocket, and it's excellent. It's a great emergency "standard" lens when travelling with the 60-250.

I have the FA 35 which is quite a bit larger, so that's my main excuse. I can see traveling with just the DA 21 and the XS for some really stealth shooting - no more than a shirt pocket for storage. Also, I can imagine times where I would prefer the 40mm in the bag rather than the DA 50; I suspect that the two lens offer somewhat different looks with the XS rendering more similarly to the FA 35 (a good thing in my book).

It's a tiny 40mm f/2.8 with a metal mount from Pentax - for under $100.
What's not to like?
Snagged one.

I bought it to put on my K-01. It just seemed like I should have it. Yup that is the reason, LBA had nothing to do with it.

Yup see how great it looks. The K-01 was calling for it.

Stopped by the park while running errands today with the K-01 and the new 40mm. So far so good.

Tried at $65, again at $70 and again at $75. No dice.

Will buy from Amazon on Monday if it's still around the $92 mark since Chase will be doing 10% off Amazon purchases.
