As for Amex (or any other credit card company) they won't pay for anything if it's still covered by the manufacturer's warranty unless they refuse to fix or replace the item. Plus not all credit card companies offer this service.
When you start living on a fixed income, feel free come back and tell us how you just throw stuff out rather than return it for replacement.
Tom,
Thanks for your reply. We all live on fixed income for the most part, the question is whether your income is from employment or retirement savings. I am also a financial planner and I can tell you that my retirees have a propensity to spend with the best of them now that they have more time to shop.
The discussion here is about a $10 card, which is in fact a throwaway. Yes, if it is a $39 card, it may be a different story, but that is a decision you make to buy a more expensive item, in higher capacity, etc.
The answers to your specific questions...
Amex has a number of protections, including (return protection, purchase protection and extended warranty), you are going to get coverage through one of those. Most of the time, for cheap items, you do not even need to submit anything.
Pretty much every Visa and Mastercard is going to have this also as a benefit, however I have yet to file a claim with them, and do know it is a bit tougher, er not as easy as Amex.
But I agree, if I spent $40 on a card, I would have different expectations than the $10 cards we are talking about here.

2 cups of Starbucks (crap!) is about 3 weeks of coffee at home.
I don't go to Starbucks JUST for the coffee... in fact, I really dislike the taste of most coffee.
For that $5 + cup of coffee (Latte, etc), I get free refills of brewed tea or coffee, free internet, a nice place to sit down and have a meeting, or just sit down and chat up with someone next to me. It is typically a nice place to go and work with a change of scenery.
