Then let me state: strange are the ways of the market-economy.

I'd be tempted by the 10-17 if I didn't already have the wide end covered like mad. I really don't have any holes in my lens collection right now.

What do you guys think will happen with these lens prices once the FF comes out, especially the D-FA 100mm? Do you think they will stay low so people can afford to buy them along with the FF or do you think they'll go back to regular price?

I'm trying to figure out if I should get it now even though I've already spent too much on lenses, or wait a bit and sell some lenses first and hope it stays or goes back down to the current price.

Well, I don't really know... but I think there will be less incentive to keep prices low when/if demand rises. So, sale prices may vanish if the FF camera inspires a lot of demand.

However, just because of price point, the number of people who can afford a FF at (I dunno) $2500 USD is only a fraction of those who can afford a very capable K-3 at around $700 USD. So, maybe lens demand won't be a huge part of the consideration?

For me, the big question is this: What all "comes with" the FF camera announcement and in following months? More lenses of various types not yet mentioned? A few Ricoh/Pentax surprises? A refresh of the FF Limiteds, "now with HD"?

If there is a gap in your line-up and you can afford the pain, now is a good time. These are the lowest prices seen in some time for these lenses. Or wait for the FF, see what happens, be open to buying a used lens or two if prices rise. I know the feeling. I'm having the same thoughts too.

Should be just a few more days now!

You make some good points yuc. I guess it all depends on how good of a seller the new FF is. Considering the guesstimated sale price maybe they won't be flying off the shelves, or maybe they will, who knows .

The other point about what else will come along with the new FF - I think it's reasonable to expect some new lenses, either refreshes or completely new ones. That part excites and scares me. I know it'll induce major LBA.

Funny thing is the longest lens I own is 55mm. I live in the city and I don't shoot portraits or bugs, so I'm trying to imagine in what situations I'd be able to make good use of a 100mm macro. Also the D-FA 100mm WR is SMC. Like you said, I wouldn't be surprised if a new HD version is released.

Why don't I have enough money so that I can just buy everything (said every LBA-sufferer that ever lived)...

Guys, we're letting consumerism get the best of us! Stay strong
It'll be ok...

in this world economy, as the underdog, it would be suicide to start selling products with astronomical margins. But i see Sony keeps trying (i know, i know, they, as a whole, are not really "underdog")

Adam, can you shed light on why these sales are happening? They seem to me to be significant historic lows for a lot of lenses, and I don't consider February to be a typical sale season. Is it just hype before the FF launch? Clearing out old stock for a new round of 4K lenses instead of HD?
I think these sales are linked directly to a very much slowing global economy. In the US all of Q4 retail sales across the US economy, which is arguably one of if not the most significant thing for our economy. It included Christmas and Black Friday and Cyber Monday and all that... sales... all down. Amazon down. Ebay down. Macy's down.

The stock market (which I watch regularly) is on high alert and is see sawing back and forth because people are scared we are about to enter another recession.

But it's chalked up in the books as fact that retail sales for almost everything in the US are and have been declining even during key buying seasons so I don't see any reason why cameras would be any different.

THEN you add onto that Japan just went negative on their interest rates and the Chinese economy is horrid... the Shanghai stock market lost 25% of it's total value since December.

So basically I wouldn't pin the 'Pentax sales prices' on Pentax. They are just like everyone else.. they are trying to stay afloat just like every other retailer out there and are competing for ever tighter budgets across the globe.

Confounding the problem is the fact that the US$ has remained strong vis-a-vis other foreign currencies. This has baffled everyone, and it remains to be seen how the Fed will react if this situation persists. Trade is at almost standstill and has been reduced to bare essentials, ever since US$ has remained this strong. In our case, we have lost almost 20% of our value against the dollar and it's not looking good. And the "oilmageddon" is making the problem more complex.

Specific to us Pentaxians, our country produces our beloved Pentax cameras, and worse, Pentax' market share here is virtually nil, so every produce has to go elsewhere. The production (labor) cost is low, but everything else in the manufacturing chain has been suffering. The chain must continue moving, but with a soft demand everywhere, Ricoh has to accept a lower contribution margin for every unit sold.
