Not sure (and, if I am wrong, someone please correct me), but I think it is very likely they are identical (except for the front trim ring). I suspect that, with the low number of K 28/2 lenses made and sold, that the 2nd-generation ones (issued during the M era) were likely assembled from parts made during the K (pre-m) era.

If there were any difference at all (other than the labeling), I suppose that there could possibly be a minor coating difference (?).

Not too many of us have had experience with both models, I would surmise (?) (I have only the K era version myself).

yes likewise I have K era copy too - lens went 'cheap' from my viewpoint - thought it would not 800-900 AUD range. Someone got a good price.

Yes, indeed. About $500 USD is a really low price for what I've seen the only-occasionally-for-sale K 28/2 go for nowadays.

Well, as long as the gear lives on without being crippled (i.e., having its diaphragm lever removed), which is what a few Canon users have been doing to some of the Pentax gems - - so hopefully not in this case.

Same optics just the lens name changed, Pentax started adding "mm" after the focal length sometime in 1977. Any K Series lenses that continued production and weren't replaced by a "M"version had this name change as well. (K30/2.8, K50/1.2, K135/2.5 to name a few) "SMC" was also changed to lower case in the name.
