Heiland-branded Pentax H3 with what looks like reversed aperture ring Super Tak lens
Posted By: pathdoc, 05-26-2016, 08:52 AM

Vintage Pentax H3 Honeywell Heiland Camera W Asahi Super Takumar Lens | eBay

Make it yours for $40 US plus shipping! Ideal for the Sunny Sixteen/handheld meter addict who hasn't got a Heiland in their collection. Even comes with a coldshoe mount for flash!

I suspect for my American colleagues the shipping would be substantially reduced by the lack of need to pay duties, making this an even better deal.

What, if anything, is the difference between the Super Multi Coated and the SMC, apart from the obvious external trim? Slightly improved multi-coating process? Or did they change the formula?
While I cannot speak directly to the optical formula, I can provide real data on the 19 samples in my collection. Tests are on Full Frame. SMC PENTAX 1:1.8/55 is the top scorer.

From the database:

Model Count of Units tested Average - Min F Acceptable sharp Score B (A + half of corner stdev) Average - Min F Acceptable sharp Stops Delta from fMax Average - Min F Corner stdev Average - Min F Acceptable from F1 Sum Average - Weighted Score 1 (Center counts for half)
SMC PENTAX 1:1.8/55 3 3.3098 1.5098 0.5159 14.2275 3.0519
Super-Takumar 1:2/55 1 3.3177 1.3177 0.3717 15.1711 3.1318
SMC PENTAX 1:2 55mm 6 3.4087 1.4087 0.4148 15.0304 3.2013
Auto-Takumar 1:1.8/55 1 3.6396 1.8396 0.3717 15.4461 3.4537
SMC TAKUMAR 1:2/55 4 3.7493 1.7493 0.3944 16.7773 3.5521
Super Takumar 1:2/55 1 4.1208 2.1208 0.3493 17.5693 3.9462
Super-Takumar 1:1.8/55 3 4.9361 3.1361 0.6080 21.1568 4.6321

In all cases Min F Acceptable Sharp score correlated directly to maximum achievable resolution at best F... so we are using Min F Acceptable Sharp score to show a practical difference between the models.

How to interpret the score - the last column indicates the lowest F that the lens is performing very well at on a Full Frame sensor.

Sorry for the messy table. PF automatically trims out all the extra spaces.
