I'd probably buy this lens if the focusing ring wasn't so small...

That's crazy, even given today's prices!

Wow. I bought mine for something like $1300.00 Canadian. It had been used as a demo lens by a sales rep for a couple of years.

Pentax built this in the past. Wonder what primes they will build in the future.

It would be a no brainer to rebuild this as is + WR even with MF it should be fine as long as it remains a * designated lens. This thing will sell like a hot cake even at $1796 (their magic number).

Is Pentax/Ricoh listening?

Given this lens's reputation, I'd think that they could double the price and it'd still sell.

You own this lens, right? Does it live up to the hype?

Yeah, and I would be dreaming if I thought I could get that price for mine, but I would have to think about it if it was offered

I was amazed the first time I looked through the lens. Takes good technique. Like long lens in reverse. Best results with tripod. Haven't done a study, but it seems to have better bokeh & separation of subject from backround at higher f stops than other lenses. Not a lens for tight quarters. Can be much further from subject (min. focus 20 inches, 51 cm), so as not to scare insects away.

If you find one a good price, you won't regret it. Most recent reviewer in lens database paid $4000. The FA 100 or 50 f2.8 macros are easier and more forgiving to use handheld, as well as forgiving on the wallet! Perhaps the 1.7 & 1.4 AF are of high enough quality that you might be able to take nice shots with a Pentax FA/DFA 100mm macro at a greater distance. Anyone tried it?

Some have said the low availability/high price of this lens for Pentax users, apart from low manufactured numbers, is exacerbated by others converting the lens to other mounts. I'm actually surprised to see so many for sale in the past 2-3 years. There was a stretch of time for several years where I never saw one for sale.

Love my Pentax gear. But if $4300+ was my only option, I'd rent the Nikon 200 & Canon 180 lenses to see if a dedicated body & lens for less made sense, along side my Pentax gear. Canon also has the 1-5x lens for those who want crazy close in a single lens.

As Adam said, it's a crazy price.
