With what seems like fungus in the front element, is the price still worth the risk?

Yuck, yeah that's fungus. I wouldn't risk it, if only because it could migrate to your other gear.

Edit: Nope, never mind.

Fungus doesn't spread like that from all that I have read. The fungus spores are likely inside all of your lenses but conditions haven't been favorable for growth yet.

The main question is what damage if any has been done to the coatings. If you are lucky very little damage has been done.

Yeah, thanks for catching that. I searched through some older threads and you're exactly right.

Honestly I only think it is true. Reading scientific articles on the prevalence of fungal spores isn't very easy reading. What I have read isn't conclusive enough for me to be 100% certain, but I'm at least 90%.

@dcshooter

Yes I suspect Brian could clean this up. The missing hood is another issue. I think the lens is priced with these things in mind.

Actually I think it overpriced. The fungus is a lottery - damage to the coatings will be a bummer.

I'm on the fence. The and coatings are supposedly less vulnerable than some but you are correct. The fa* is slightly narrow field of view and with a good the chance of direct Sun on the spot is reduced so flare issues may be low even so.
