Optically the f/6.7 version has superior correction for colour aberrations.

So that would be a bit more that $26,000 then?

Unless you absolutely need f/4* the newer Pentax-M*67 800mm f/6.7 ED IF is superior...and substantially lighter.

*this lens isn't great at f/4 anyway, CA is a problem even when stopped down.

I also have the dedicated 1.4x rear converter for it, in case 800mm isn't long enough.

I just did a quick image search through my old lightroom catalog, turns out I used the 800mm f/4 with a Pentax 67 to K adapter on a K10D in 2007 - so this raises some questions, what happened to that lens? and who in my family owned it?

Here is a sample of the image quality:

Pentax K10D - Pentax SMC67 800mm f/4 - ISO 400 1/1250th f/8 100% crop.

Just look at all that CA, it is Nasty.

That's a lot of fringing !

What a pain to set everything up for only two birds

And that is from the center of the image, the periphery is a complete mess. I'll have to find a sample from the Pentax 800mm f/6.7 ED for comparison.

I recall who owned this lens, my uncle who took a lot of propaganda *ahem* photos for the Australian defense force. He used the 800mm f/4 to photograph fast moving aircraft, my mother used to borrow it from him when she wanted to get publicity photographs at car rally events. My mother is 5'3" the visual effect of her carrying this lens, which is almost as tall as she is along with a tripod sturdy enough to handle it would have been hysterical though I'm pretty sure she hired a pair of assistants.

IMO this lens is completely overpriced. I'd say in absolute mint condition, including the lens case including the dedicated 1.4x rear converter, a total value of $8000 is being generous.

Sometime i do wonder how many objects realted to photography your family own, because i am under the impression that pretty much all the Digitalis-family work in image related fields

ahem, this lens is designed for medium format and here we are criticising its performance on an old 10MP APC-S

Price aside, I would like to see it perform on the format it was designed for. Only then can I appreciate the review.

For those who do not know, those birds pictured are very small - very small! I could fit one of them in my clasped hand. So, that is a might crop I see there!!
