Pentax Takumar 67 6x7 600mm F/4 Lens ( there's haze in the lens and in situation such as shooting under bright light this should have some affect on photo quality )

Haze. May need a CLA or it may be worse. Nice find however.

While I'm sure this is not the most convenient lens to use, I really wonder how it performs relative to sharpness and colors with digital cameras, how bad is the purple fringing?

This is a strange lens. I have owned one for 20 years. It is corrected for 3 colors(APO), however the correction in the marginal area of the elements is poor, giving you massive fringing wide open. This quickly diminishes when stopping down. By f/13 it is nearly gone... by f/22 not noticeable. It is quite sharp once you get beyond the CA. It does really well with the 1.4 and 2X converters because they are highly color corrected. They intercept the fringing rays before they get to the focal plane and the reduce the color spectrum.

Thanks @desertscape the 700mm+ f5.6 doesn't sound like a bad idea.

An interesting piece of information is that the designer of this lense is Tohru Matsumoto, son of Saburo Matsumoto (the guy who built up the modern Pentax from the ashes of three boombed factories after WW2). Tohru Matsumoto was head of Pentax from 1975-1996. It is the only lens patent where he is the leading inventor. The patent is from 1970. Between his MIT degree in 1963 and taking over the leadership of Asahi Optical Company from his dad in 1975, he probably worked a while in different departments, including enough time at the lens design department to draw this beast. Not a bad apprentice exam! Sorry for the rambling. A bit of Pentax history.

It's short and heavy, like a cinder block. Requires proper tripod support, as well as support on the camera end. As Steve mentions the lens works fine on a Pentax 6x7 film body, not sure on digital.

What a neat lens, I'm digging the bits of history about it!
