It would make sense to discount the S rather than the SC, if the 4K version was the reason.
I suspect the SC is discounted because people are not happy with the quality of the video and that it is also lacking these features:

• ・Color temperature specification shots *1
• ・Interval composite shots *1
• ・My Settings *1
• ・Multi bracket shooting *1

*1 RICOH THETA SC is not supported.

In practice I don't think those features are of any value. The SC and the S are pretty much the same in the field, IMO. The only thing bothersome about the SC is that the LED lights are much brighter, and at night they can bounce off your fingers and show up in the image.

Here are some pics I took on a recent trip. I was lazy and just screenshotted the Theta app to process these quickly, so the image quality is pretty far off what it could be. Still about a third of the resulting trip photo album was taken with the Theta. The rest an even split between phone pics, the K-1, and a 1" compact. Everything has its place

When you need something to capture everything around you quickly and easily, the Theta is unrivaled. It's perfect inside a room, car, airplane, etc., and also great for panos and selfies.
