Likely an incorrectly secured/too small tripod tipped over on some elevated rocks, the camera tor out the mount and the heavy lens tumbled down the rocks.

Something similar happened to me personally 20y ago on a hiking trip, when my hiking backpack (1 week back country stuff) tipped over on a small footbridge during a break and pushed down my open camera bag. Much smaller lens and I was able to re-attach the mount well enough to carefully take pictures, but it taught me a lesson.[COLOR="Silver"]

That lens was the victim of terrible tragedy. It has physical damage, and fungus! I'd say it was given to a dog as a chew toy.

Used in a war zone in the humid tropics?

The owner's wife used it as a club to beat the owner within an inch of his life after he announced that he was switching to Canikon and would have to buy all new gear. The lens then sat in the police evidence lockup until it was used in the trial, where the the judge announced she was dismissing the case and would have even judged "Justifiable homicide" if the owner had croaked.

That looks like a lens used by the military or a police force. Anyone who actually paid for a fa250-600 would never have it deteriorate to that condition.
If you use it for work then the employees don't care if it gets beat up. Typical abuse of government property!

It's almost worth buying this to send it in for warranty repair and enjoy the response

A fate that could have been avoided, if only he'd fitted a UV filter...
