HD-DA 55-300 WR's (new) - $146.95 at B&H
Posted By: disasterfilm, 03-01-2018, 08:58 AM

This is $250 below their normal price. This is beyond plausibly cheap for a really fantastic budget zoom lens.

Though I don't need one, I'm having a hard time not buying.

I already have the DA L version but the better build quality and weather sealing is worth buying a second one. I ordered one for 230ish Canadian shipped. Who knows when it will get in though.

Bear with me...I don't own any Pentax products, but will probably purchase the K-70 kit by the end of this week. As I understand it, this lens was superseded by a weather-sealed, faster and silent-focusing, lighter and smaller one, that retails for $200 more. What is the attraction of spending money on an obsolete lens, when a not so much-more expensive newer alternative is readily-available?

It probably hasn't been selling well as of late do to the new PLM version but for 147 usd new, it's a steal. Since its screw drive you know it will work for a very long time. Another plus, although I'm not sure, is that it may cover more of the FF circle.
Oh. It also has a slightly larger aperture.

I wouldn't call the WR obsolete, YMMV

read the " In Depth Review " of each to compare

older WR

HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

newer PLM

HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM WR RE Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

different apertures

PLM cannot be used on certain Pentax camera bodies

different autofocus methods

both WR ( note WR is weather resistant not water proof or sealed )

It's sealed, just not water proof sealed.

just trying to learn

both rated WR by Pentax

" WR - "WR" means the the lens is weather resistant, and can stand up to rain and snow when due diligence is exercised "

what does " sealed " mean ?

I meant it as not " sealed " to prevent water from entering under all conditions

The attraction is that it was super inexpensive, making it a huge value item. I've had a copy of this lens before, which I sold because I wasn't using it much. While I couldn't justify having a $250 lens gathering dust on a shelf, I *can* justify having a $117 lens just sitting around doing nothing every now and then... for the rare occasions when I would pick that instead of my better/bigger/non-WR lenses. I've got better lenses at every focal length, but not all are WR, and sometimes I'm limited by how much space I have or how much weight I can carry. Then this one will go into consideration.

If this was the PLM version, I would have bought them all before posting the thread and re-sold them here for a big discount (for you) and a big profit (for me)

I'm glad we sold B&H out of these.

OK ok ok, a resale pricing structure better based off of how much I enjoy particular posters' offerings.

You won't be sad about having that DA*300 instead. If it's one or the other, you made the exceedingly correct choice.

I told my wife about this lens deal and she asked if I wanted it and I said yeah I think so. So she said “Well go ahead and order it, happy anniversary.” 4 years happily married yesterday

Hopefully B&H is able to fill the backorders.

Thank you for all of your responses. They've convinced me not to buy this lens, even though it appears to be priced to go.

I really like my SMC DA 55-300, thought I got a bargain on it several years ago at $250 new.
Since getting the DA* 300 it hasn't been on my camera.
I was still very tempted by this deal.

I'm dumb but not that dumb

I think
