It's great with a discount, but I don't understand the pricing here...how long have they sold this for, how many units (to recoup the initial "development costs"), how expensive is it to ship and sell and what are the manufacturing costs for this...It should cost $6 not 60!

(I know there are cheaper 3rd party options, but that just leads to risks, I've tried a couple that almost cost me the lens and/or camera...)

These "official" Pentax screw thread to K adapters have been around for years and have always been overpriced (in my opinion). I often wondered why these are considered better than all the zillion aftermarket ones that sell for dramatically less.

They've always been easy to find at much lower prices. Try searching evilBay for Asahi but spelled wrong...Ashai works sometimes...

Quite simply, the cheap ones are inferior in fit and functionality and offer an excellent chance of becoming permanently attached to your camera unless modified. There are essential fine points of design that are not reproduced in the no-name adapters.

They are badly overpriced, however.

Since Ricoh isn't making more screwmount lenses they aren't going to make money selling more lenses by selling these adapters. Ricoh seems to only do limit production runs from time to time of the adapters. They have to make money on these somehow. There was a long spell (2-3 years) when neither Hoya nor Ricoh made any. You should be grateful that Ricoh still produces these. The used market will dry up eventually.

When these adapters were going new from Pentax/Hoya/Ricoh at $29.95 USD the used market was routinely getting $50-60 USD on eBay. Now that the price new is $60-90 USD these can be had used for under $20-30 USD easily on eBay.

Why were people willing to pay $60 used on eBay but not $60 new from Adorama or B&H?

Because they weren't available new. Even then you could find them for less than $60. Used prices are almost back to what they were 10 years ago, when you could buy them new for $40, when they were in stock, which wasn't often.

This is particularly contra-intuitive since there is more engraving on the older versions. You get an entire additional word - Asahi - engraved on the old ones.
