I saw this on the bay. It looks pretty good, especially at he price of $178. Going by the pictures it is the real deal.

Take good care of it. They really are quite rare.

If something made in the 10s of thousands can be considered rare. I also got mine on a Spotmatic from goodwill, though it was more thant $9.99 and it was from shopgoodwill.com when you could still get deals there (less than $100 IIRC).

I looked it up, $88 winning bid, $101 after shipping. Sept 2010.

I don't think I've seen one go for under $160-170 on shopgoowill.com for the last year or so. At least on eBay you usually have a return policy, not to mention better pictures to judge by.

That was way before the buyers for Amazon took over Goodwill auctions and ruined it for the average Joe !

I scored my 8 element 15 years ago. It was on a Spotmatic body I bought on ebay. I didn't know what I lucked into at the time.

Definitely not long gone, maybe more rare though. There are deals to be made on eBay if you look closely at listings. I just recently got a PZ-1P in perfect order with a SMC K 20mm f/4.0 attached for an absurdly low price because the listing was completely mislabeled. The 20 is at the local camera repairman getting a CLA and I could probably sell the PZ-1P for most of what I paid on eBay for the whole thing. I also got an M 40mm pancake for like 30$. I was watching when it was more than 60 I think, the listing said it had some haze. The seller first lowered the price, then within a few days sent me an offer for 30$ and I accepted without blinking. The lens looks pretty clear of haze to me and is cosmetically near mint.

Looking at the auction photos, I was left wondering how one gets brassing and paint loss on the rear element retainer collar (the part actually touching the glass). I have "very good" lenses of this vintage and the sale item is fundamentally dissimilar other than the beauty ring and front element.

Apparently, they made 129 000. How many good ones are left is anybody's guess.

That's a great point - given the 8-element is now 55 years old at least, one has to wonder how many are still out there.

I'm pleased to have two keepers (in addition to two I'm selling - see my listing https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/24-photographic-equipment-sale/398245-sa...8-element.html for one, the other will be listed once that one has sold).

One is in excellent shape and is used on my K-1. The other is a mint one from only the second batch produced - with 'Lollipop' instead of diamond and red R next to the IR marker, in original case - where it stays. It's virtually like new...
