Adorama deal - Superzoom Nikon Coolpiix P1000 refurbished
Posted By: gatorguy, 12-14-2020, 12:35 PM

I've looked at this camera off and on simply because of its ludicrous 3000mm telephoto. Seriously.

At the regular price of nearly $1000 it was way beyond play money for me but Adorama has refurbished models today only for under $600. Worth considering for some of you landscape and nature shooters IMHO.

Cool. To be honest I am very impressed by what people are doing with these cameras. If you can get reasonably close to your subject, the resulting image quality is pretty good. I tend to carry around heavy gear but if I ever needed something really light for wildlife, this or the P950 would be my first choice.

Those Sony "super zoom" bridge cams can't really be called "really light" at about a kilo!

Plus the body of the camera is larger than the body of the K-1/K-1ii too!!

I saw this when the deal dropped at 9a CST, and I've had to talk myself out of buying one several times though.

It’s really a beast. Enormous. Very capable camera.
Apart from that, the particular website describes the K-1II as an “average” landscape camera. And, in addition, an “excellent” street camera. No words...

Considering the lightest good lenses that go to at least 500mm are about 1.5kg or heavier (!), I would call it pretty light. My current setup for birds is about 2.8kg. 1kg is amazingly light.

At 539mm, the actual aperture is f/8. Since crop factor for a 1/2.3" sensor is 5.6, the 135 equivalent is 3018mm @ f/44. Yes... f/44. But it's the physical f/8 aperture that would concern me. It means use at the long end will be very dependent on good light, or else ISO needs to rise quickly... while diffraction must be rather significant. Presumably Nikon does a lot of image processing to make images look sharp...

I had one of the Canon bridge cameras with the 50x zoom and you had to have a tripod for good 50x zoom shots. I imagine one would really be a necessity for 125x zoom. For the money one could get into a decent telescope with a camera adapter ?
