I bought mine the day it came out for sale. I think costed around $1000 brand new. Some whined that it was too expensive back then. A good investment.

There's a Sigma 180mm f3.5 EX Macro in Pentax mount on the bay of e's for just under 800 Euros (located in France). Seems like a much better value.

There must have been a sale at the focus ring store when Pentax was making these 200mm Macros...

Actually it was proposed around USD2000, but with fungus inside and no lens-hood filter clip (*).
I managed to get it for USD1600, and the seller had in the meantime processed it to Pentax for fungus cleaning.
But OK to let you know if i see something around those values.

(*) you can find spare (black ones) on 645 FA150-300mm lens hood

Lens sigma 180 f3.5 ex dg apo macro for pentax | eBay

it's a great lens, but if you want a long macro that's great and available, don't overlook the irix 150.

a cheaper one also sold from germany, but was a 1:2 5.6 macro, a entirely different lens.

Would this be better than a brand new Irix 150mm Macro (799,- € new) plus a good TC 1.4x => f4/210mm?

One lens overlooked by many is the Vivitar Series 1 90-180mm f4.5 flat field macro. Yes, it's big and heavy but it provides 1:2 macro at 180mm and it's not that much slower than an f4. It is a bargain among long macro lenses. It was manufactured by the well respected Kino (aka Kiron).

Yes, but at 1:2, is it really even a macro... or just what Vivitar calls a macro for marketing purposes?
