Back up to $49.99 at B&H but the link Tibbitts provided still shows the 50% off directly from Affinity.

Deal appears to be back on at B&H (the link in the original post still works). Not certain how long this is going to be around for but I'm tempted to give it a shot at $24.99.

How does Affinity compare in terms of fine control over detail, colors, the things LR is good at?

Hopefully, Hjoseph7 or Risxsoul (or another current user) will be able to address your questions. I just placed the order with B&H (had to wait for the checkout to open), so it will be some time before I have enough experience to make a meaningful contribution.

I don't think it is fair comparing Affinity Photo to LR, it's more comparable to Photoshop.
While I'm not super advanced in photo editing, AP has all the features I've needed.

For me, the things I loved about LR are non-existent in Affinity Photo. That is stuff for organising, and batch developing, or even a quick and easy way to develop a set of RAW files. If you're OK with working on files 1 by 1 then you should do the AP trial and see.

I'm much more of a fast developer than a Photoshop-type developer

I got a copy of Affinity a few months back though I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I had an issue in downloading it and contacted Affinity customer service. They got right back to me within hours and solved my issue so +1 for Affinity. I'm done with Photoshop (other than older versions on my machines) because of the "cloud" and their move to a subscription marketing model.

Then AP isn't a good substitute. It works great and is a bargain for other stuff, but anything like developing (and having it not look crap) with a single click isn't there.

Oh, I'm not so much one for the single click, but I like my tools to be tuned to control of things like lighting, color channels, contrast... that sort of thing, as opposed to layer editing and in-depth local controls.

Well all those adjustments are available, guess I misunderstood "fast"

I just remember using LR to develop a set of photos quickly then going through each photo to do minor adjustments (crop, cloning, inpainting, etc) then moving on. Can't do that quickly with AP, had to batch develop elsewhere then open the jpg/png in AP to do the rest, it was a pain.

After a couple of days using the software, I have to agree that developing the raw file is certainly the weakest link. I don't think the Affinity demosaicing is necessarily that effective, and I can get better results faster in RawTherapee. That said, I like the straight forward user interface and can see this working well for my backend processing.
