They are for steel. A fancy 32 Amp kiln for kitchen knives, and a more basic (but 45" long!) 20 Amp kiln for swords
If you're interested to see what I get up to, look HERE

I do like a Damascus Steel Blade , Forged In Fire is one of my favorite shows.
As Doug Marcaida says "This Sword will KEEL"

It's a beautiful lens to use, but unless your arm muscles are like the 'Rock' the chances are you will need a tripod with a gimbal head.
It's actually quite amazing how easy it is to use one of these size lenses on the right Gimbal and Tripod combo, basically almost anti-gravity. I'm still half thinking about it.

This is not a lens for hands free handling. However, with a monopod, a beanbag, or standing on an object to stabilize it, it's workable... otherwise, yes a sturdy tripod + head, and also a lens support provides the sharpest images you can get at 600mm

I found my F*250-600/5.6 to be sharper @300/5.6 than DA*300/4 @f/5.6. And I think most agree that DA*300 stopped down to 5.6 is sharp.

I never made this comparison, but that's interesting! I might do it in a near future.

Nice lens, but with no trunk......

I've seen a lot of Pentax super telephoto lenses lately, in all formats, with the trunk missing. Not sure how you can "misplace" something that big, hopefully the original owner did not just chuck it???

Phil.

Phil.
I personally have the original case, but I don't use it, it's too easy to scratch, and damage. So if that's for the "collection" value, it's preferable to have one. If that's only for carrying aroung, there are other DIY solutions.
In my case, I use a very sturdy and sealed tool box to carry it around, Added internal padding, silicagel for humidity, a temp + relative humidity sensor. So when I use it in cold weather, I leave it inside until it get at the room temperature. Also, it's less appealing for the thieves...compared to a silver big box with that large PENTAX logo.
