I’ve never seen one in person. How does it compare to the D FA 100? It looks massive and heavy by comparison. Is the optical quality that much better? Or is it just the focal length and manual focus that is the appeal?

I have one.
It is really well built...good quality. Yes, it is heavy.
I have only APS-C bodies so the 150mm means I have to stand pretty far away to get shots. Owners of K-1 would have less trouble here, of course, it is market to full frame shooters.
It will be useful to scan slides and negatives with my K-3.3!!!

You can find a bit of a comparative write-up in the discussion thread on the new D-FA 100 AW. I don't have the D-FA 100 AW yet, so I cannot comment on how the two compare.
