It may be premature to say this but its been looking like prices have been coming back down to sane levels recently.

Yes... there's been some movement on lens prices lately.

I was surprised the FA 43mm Limited was available for $569.95 when I checked B&H a week or so ago. But the FA 31mm Limited is still $964.95 and the FA 77mm Limited is $784.95.

However, the DA Limiteds, if you can live with the slightly smaller apertures, are much more affordable: DA 21mm at $509.95, DA 40mm at $339.95 and the DA 70mm at $549.95.

Not quite as bad as getting a 40/2.8 ltd in early 2009 for $190 and selling it for $200

WOW...you guys used to get the lenses for next to nothing! Much safer if you invested in glass than stocks it seems.

Was studying up the 43's. Was amazed how cheap lenses were. Good to remember how things were or in my case learn.

I got mine second hand a year later for close to that ...IIRC I paid $400 for mine. Best $400 I ever spent.

Fortunately people don't realize how cheap lenses were pre-Hoya. I bought the DA 40 for 270, an FA 50 for 185, a DA 35 limited for 360. Even the FA limiteds were much cheaper -- the FA 31 was in the 600 dollar range back then.

The difference between DA and FA Limiteds is not simply one of maximum aperture. Equally, if not more, important are the rendering characteristics of the two series. FA Limiteds have the "pixie dust" effect, which some users value highly. Others prefer the punchiness of the DA Limiteds. It's a matter of personal preference, but the FA Limiteds are more expensive, because they are generally considered more desirable.

I paid $570 for my FA43 from B&H on March 28, 2011. I thought it was a bargain then, and I still do, as the lens is truly magnificent. I'm glad to see that the prices have remained stable for the FA Limiteds, despite the recent increases for other lenses.
