New Monitor, Do I really need t o spend $500-$1000

Okay looking for a new monitor. I am very happy with the Planar 17" I have but the kids need a new one and got okay to get me a new one and they can have mine. I start searching here and there and prices are from $100 - $4000 I even searched here and prices are all over the board. Any monitor I ever got came with the PC. Never bought one alone other then fro work for $125 at costco. So Lets say I want to spend $200- $300 is there something out there folks would recommend?

i am fond of samsung products. i'd be picking between viewsonic and samsung.
AG neovo is also in my top 5, but they are pricier, and are harder to find..(but quality is stunning)

Newegg.com - ViewSonic X Series VX2240W Black-Silver 22" 2msDVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1, 4000:1 (DC) - Retail

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! viewsonic 200-300$ range

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! samsung 200-300$ range

there are a couple of 22" samsungs in there that's tempting me to order now...

I bought an LG about a year ago, 22 inch with fast (3mS response time) and 3000:1 contrast ratio. was about $450 at the time, but prices on 22 inch have dropped a lot since then

Hi Pat,

If this helps, I own a Dell 2005FPW Ultrasharp. It's a 20.1" widescreen - bought just over a year ago. The clarity is amazing, and I paid around $425 shipped when it was 25% off regular price. Now you can buy similar ones for $200-$300.

However, mine has a lot of extras, so that's why I paid the extra $100 over similar monitors. It has an adjustable height stand, multiple connection types, and portrait/landscape mode (it swivels into a vertical position - nice for long web page reading and similar stuff).

It's not the best of the rest, but it's very crisp, and colors are excellent. My print room tech commented that he's only seen two files of the 100+ I've sent to him that the color was just a bit off, but nothing glaring. Only a serious graphics pro would want more. I've seen them sold by reputable ebay sellers for just over $200.

Assuming your video card has a DVI-D, just make sure you get one that has that spec. Normally the DVI-D LCD panels are a little more, instead of the VGA only LCD panels. I've got dual monitor capable cards, just no dual monitors...

Good luck in your search!

Cheers,
Marc

I'd go for the LG. i have the 24" version of what you listed at work and it is nice clear and sharp, but i still prefer the look and feel of the samsungs

As I posted I bought the LG and would recommend them to anyone, although by chance, having my initials on the front of my monitor might have some slight personal bias in this recommendation

I have and like this:

Amazon.com: Samsung 216BW 21.6" LCD Monitor-Black: Computers & PC Hardware

However, I'm not sure LCD is the best type for heavy photo editing.

I would recommend "widescreen" in any event. You'll have some extra window area that will prove handy.

I work in the IT department at my work and we use Dell LCDs- mainly the 1908FP and 198FP 19" normal aspect monitors. They both seem to be a little too bright out of the box, and using just some quick adjustments I've not been able to retain detail and color vibrancy while toning down the brightness.

I love my Samsung 17" (paid $250 for it a couple years ago )

It takes some fiddling to get the colors and blacks right, but nothing ridiculous.

As was said before, make sure your comp has the right outputs. New monitors are starting to eliminate VGA, moving to DVI and some to HDMI...

I know I'm going to get flamed for this Pat, but I'll state it anyway. Last year when I was looking for a monitor I looked at all the flat screens and all the prices. I finally talked to Brian (My IT. guy in the printing business next door.) He recommended I look not at a flat screen but at another CRT. When I asked why he explained some very sound reasons. One being the adjustable resolutions of a CRT for photography and the other was if your not looking directly at a flat screen (LCD or Plasma) and it is not set just at eye level on the desk (Get an adjustable stand) You will notice the difference in color and the monitor will seem blurred. i checked out what he told me and finally decided on a CRT. (I'm very glad I did) In fact I got a 19" KDS from wally world for $108.00 on sale. It gives me great Resolution and the adjustments for fine tuning are there. I put a Spyder II on to check Calibration and didn't have to change a thing.
So my recommendation is look into a CRT.

Thanks all. Dave I have heard this alot but honestly space is an issue so a CRT is really not an option. I am heading to the big box stores today with all the info in mind. Not sure honestly what I will come away with but I will keep you all posted. Thankd again for the advise.
