Are you sure that is enough 50's? An A would just round out the collection nicely

John - yes and no - Harvey Norman or the Kodak Shop will order stuff if you want, but they rarely carry Pentax stock. Kens Camera's in Christchurch list Pentax gear on their website, but I haven't been in their shop to confirm if they carry any stock. Mark at SMIFU (based in Christchurch) will order Pentax gear at reasonable prices if you want.

Prices at Harvey Norman, Kodak and Kens generally quite high, but sometimes they will negotiate

What no M40/2.8 pancake !??? It's the original classic and so tiny.

And the M50/2...though it gets poor reviews, it is in my experience very good and is almost as small as the pancake.
Performs very well on a short tube.

Gidday John
Welcome to the fraught world of the crap NZ Pentax distributor...
People have been buying grey imports such as from SMIFU or Expert infotech not just to save money
but also due to the pathetic service from the local distributor. I got my K-5 from HK for these reasons.
I have bought new lens and dslr from australia too as the price was better and the Agent service over there very good

Things have actually improved slightly lately so maybe the new Ricoh ownership is having some effect.
The K30 is looking like a good deal even bought locally. Ricohs plan is to re-establish Pentax in local shops.
I would much sooner support local if it is sensible.

cheers
Pete

Thanks for the information, maybe I will call in at Harvey Norman's tomorrow and see what they will do about getting a couple for me to look at. Yes, I too would rather buy local even if it costs more, it gives me the satisfaction of being able to actually go and verbally roast some poor chap if I dont get to enjoy the experience!

Anyone in Auckland Monday? I was hoping to be but can't make it -
Free ticket to anyone who wants to go to the Vincent Laforet talk at Rialto Cinema, Newmarket, Monday 27th, 6.45pm-8.15pm

Looks really good.

[EDIT] Ticket gone...

You might need to lift your sights to the inadequate distributor rather than random untrained minimum wage workers...

Good point Pete, the young chaps at Hardly Normal's tried to tell me that Pentax were a thing of the past, so I strolled down to the little Kodak shop where I got much better response and a quote of $1999 for a K5 with 18-55. I am thinking abou it.

If you are getting the kit lens, worth getting the WR version to go with the body.
Then you can stand in the rain and snow and laugh at the Canikonians, laugh I say !
If you just want the DA 18-55, then $100 will hook one on TM

K-5 + WR kit looks like about $1600 landed from T-Dimension
I don't want to pimp offshore sellers, just wish the local price reflected any increased benefit from buying local...
I have bought a bit from Camera Action in Melbourne, one of the few Aussie outfits that will export.
They seem to have K-5 (and K-30) for good prices atm

Pete

Not a terrible price but for this amount you can get the 18-135mm instead of the 18-55 from T-Dimension. You'll probably get better service in a warranty case as well since the Kodak shop will use IRL.

In any event, why not wait a bit longer and see want Pentax will announce at Photokina?
There is not much wrong with the K-5 (mainly the low light AF and bounced flash exposure issues) but surely the successor will be better.

For the patient, there should be another APS-C flagship around March next year which should be even better than the K-5 successor.

Oh well, having secured financial authority for the expenditure, and knowing as a long term public servant that such must be spent or 'lost', I called the man and it will be here on Tuesday.
