Watches

Somehow the topic of watch collecting came up in another thread and I've gotten a few responses. So, I thought a thread here where the topic is more appropriate would be good.

I have a few watches, mostly lesser known brands, but haven't been an active collector in around 2 years. I have a penchant for collecting automatics and chronos but have a good number of others as well.

I love watches both current and vintage. This is my current favorite. A manual winder. Also, my favorite vintage. An Illinois Bunn special that looks as new as the day it was made.

Gorgeous Illinois. This is one my wife brought back from France in January, it was her grandfather's... I love watches, but this was very special, JLC DuoPlan. Sorry, it wasn't shot with Pentax glass. I'll have to do a retake!

In that other thread, and this one, there were a lot of brands I've never heard of. Never seen prices like that either! However after reading the reviews on this page(amazon) I really feel like buying a Zenith.

Zenith certainly is a premier watch maker. They make their own movement for most of their watches, which is rarer and rarer these days.

Anyone have experience with repairs for the "real" Bulova Accutron? I have a back set Space View stainless steel which needs attention. It was a college graduation present in 1965.

Other than the Accutron I'm hardly a collector. I do have my father's old Hamilton from the '30s, I think, which still runs, and a handsome gold pocket watch marked "Stewart Special." To set it one must unscrew the "front cover" and pull a little lever out. The movements on these old guys are lovely to look at, as shown by larry's photo.

The old genuine Accutron SpaceView is a real collectors item with some going for big bucks. There are several specialists out there that work on them but parts are the biggest barrier to getting one fixed. The list below is based on my vague recollection from comments by SpaceView collectors back in my watch forum days. Hope they help.

Many thanks! As far as its being a collectors' item, I recall a well-dressed stranger at the adjacent table in a good restaurant in Charleston, SC offering me $350. for it some 30 years ago. Kowabonga!

My Father-in-Laws watch given to him by his new bride. Elgin 1930 with engraving done in 1940 on their 10th anniversary.
Had it cleaned, regulated and crystal replaced in 1992 ($70) and runs fine ever since.
He was a cabinet maker and wore it everyday to work all his life. It was the only watch he ever owned.

My everyday watch. Walmart 1994? $3.95 with battery. As I recall the watch with battery cost less than than the replacement battery.
Has run perfectly all these years.

Here's mine

I only have one--about 5 years old, I guess. It keeps time more or less ok--dates, not so much (although in this pic, the day of the week is correct.)

For the benefit of those who may be tempted to buy lenses from me, I'd describe this as "minty."
