What country is this?

If this report is true, were we in Russia or the US for the last eight years?

I wonder whether the retroactive immunity provisions that were approved by congress last year in the new FISA (to Obama's and other democrats' eternal shame) would cover these new abuses as well. I hope not.

There is a reason that I refer to the unPatriot Act as such and many such domestic reports that come out under its auspices. Certain tools should be taken out of the tool box and shouldn't have been there in the first place.

There wasn't really a need to create the Dept of Homeland Security either. We already had the DOJ, DOD and elements of the DOI and USDA. The irony is that DHS was created because agencies from the others didn't interact enough so a 4th was created. BATF and the FBI have been known to run amuck on their own without creating super thugs under DHS.

There's probably a team of at least three monitoring this section of PF.

Well, right now they may have internet monitoring (joke or not), but their legit control is relatively small. I wonder how long that'll last?

Look at 9/11. wherever those attacks came from, the result in our government was that the attacks were used to justify the creation of laws and agencies allowing the government to excersize stricter control over travel and circumvent constitutional rights on a person's privacy. All of a sudden we have these giant cyber-attacks, god only knows where from (N. Korea's easy to blame) while there's a bill coming up to give the US government broader powers to enforce their will on the internet... I wonder what other sorts of legislation they might squeeze out of this...

Respectfully....
I have lived in the US and Canada...and went to the USSR under Canadian student exchange ......
We all know what free is......and I think we know that people might use "free" in a spin....where it's not so free at all.....perhaps those rights "are not free" in a "patriotic way".
We all live in some sort of society......community.....we all want to work to make our neighborhood better.....
I hope the US recovers from the "free means every man for himself" syndrome.....very destructive and clearly seen...

Back in the day, East Germany had four spies for every citizen. They were crap at math as well.

"Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"

Our government ceased being our servant many years ago and has become our master. I honestly have no hope or expectation that this will change in the near future, regardless of who is in or who comes to power.

Mike, don't forget to add "Power attracts the corrupt and corruptible."

And quite clearly they're there.

What we really ought to do is make positions of power unnatractive. That way we might hopefully get a higher percentage of people in the higher levels who really do want to have the job in order to do what's best.

Welcome back Serge, where have you been?

I don't think it's so much surprised. Sometimes it's better to just think something is going on because you can always put it to the back of your mind. But when it's confirmed, it's hard to forget about.
Anyway, it's not a big deal really, climate change is gonna get us before they do.
