Doctor Yellow

"Doctor Yellow" is a special train on the Tokaido line which is full of equipment to measure the tracks and overhead wires. It normally operates very late at night, so seeing it is considered very lucky. It made a surprise appearance at Kyoto and everyone was very excited! The train will be phased out because the new shinkansen have the measuring equipment built into the normal trains.

I saw a detailed explanation about it on NHK. I think the program was "Japan Railway Journal". That was where I found out that the measurement equipment was built into the new Shinkansens - I think in the N700A. I never expected to see Doctor Yellow!

Sure was! As far as I know, the train is unique, so it was like travelling on the "Hello Kitty" bullet train.

Strange, I thought I had a photo of the "Hello Kitty" shinkansen on Flickr already. I'll have to upload one! Some of the other new trains (for me) on this trip were in Kyushu, like this "Sonic".
