We traditionally camp up there over Thanksgiving weekend (brrrr!), but not this year with a newborn. Might be driving up for some snaps the week before, though that depends on the peak (in the south along the road).

We were out near some Whitney area wetlands and were seeing this...



I wondered, if the colour was caused by the drought, or if many of the trees in the park were turning yet. So off we went to Opeongo Lookout for the sunset.

Not much happening yet, at least from here..



But there was a very nice sunset.







Here's Tripper at the lookout.



This is moments before he came rolling down the hill, and then sliding on his back. I was thinking "I've never seen him do that before." When I felt some very sharp stinging pain on my ankles elbow and knee.

One of the dogs , probably Tripper must have stuck his nose in a hornet nest and I was been stung 6 or 7 times before I gave up and left. Of course we missed the best part of the sunset.

I suffer terribly, terribly I say, to bring you these pictures.

Next time the mutlies stay home.

Thanks for the great pictures Norm. They say there is "no gain without pain" Particularly true in the field when going the extra mile for that special nature shot!
My sense is that the Fall colors are delayed this year, but I have been wrong before.

I'm not sure how spectacular they'll be this year. many of the Red maples have aready turned, but the other trees for the most part are just starting. We may have muted fall colours, to go along with a few years ago when it rained for the whole peak, and we got not even one good picture. Last year was pretty spectacular so we can't complain.

We don't recognize that view, which eliminates Centennial Ridges, Booths Rock, Lookout Trail and Opeongo Lookout so were a little mystified.. but we notice you're a bit down the rock face so it's possible the we can't see the lakes you'd see from the top.. which is how we usually identify where pictures were taken.

Thanks for taking a look. Yes, I put my tripod (and myself) on the precipice for that one (and almost lost my gear over the cliff shortly thereafter!).

Now there's a scary though....

Well, not as scary as going over myself. I had just finished shooting the pano, and turned away from the cliff edge to take my backpack off and pack things up. I heard (and felt) a gentle "bump" when, in the corner of my eye, I saw one of the tripod legs lifting off the ground! (My backpack hit the panohead, I think) I grabbed the leg backhanded just before it all tipped over into the valley... My wife hates to hear that story, since she imagines I'd go after it!
