In 1965, I was a junior in college and homecoming weekend was approaching. Being a hair brained kid at the time, I thought it would be cool to drive an XKE in the homecoming parade, so I went down to the local Jag dealer in Dayton and somehow convinced the manager to 'loan' me a car. Now the parade was later in the afternoon but he asked me when I needed the car. I asked what time he opened in the morning and if I could pick it up at that time. At 9:00am on homecoming day I drove out of the dealership with a brand new XKE convertible. I still remember a sticker on the sun visor warning to not over rev the engine under 2,000 miles, Yea, sure. I took it out for a joy ride in the country, driving it like there was no tomorrow. What a joy, the adrenaline rush was amazing. After a few hours of excitement, I drove it in the parade with one of the homecoming queen contestants, who fell in love with the car (but not me, ha). Since the parade was in the afternoon and there was no way I could return the car before the dealership closed I got to keep it for the weekend. I've have to privilege to drive some fine cars (Porsche, Lotus, Elva, AC Ace, other Jags) and I can say the XKE was one of my favorites.
Here's a shot of an XKE in an unusual color - I took this pic at a British car show at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut last summer. While this isn't the color I'd choose, the voluptuous curves of this car as captivating as ever.
