Great idea Bob.
Here is a process I use in Gimp that gives great results:
https://web.archive.org/web/20140704074534/http://gimpguru.org/Tutorials/SmartSharpening2/
It seems a complicated process but once you suss it out it only takes a minute or 2.
I have created my own keyboard shortcuts so the process flows a little more smoothly.
An extra trick that can be done with it is to airbush black on the final edge mask to keep unsharp unnecessary details in your image.
Is any one else out there using this process? I think it is well worth the time spent.

Thanks for that GUB !
I have made a folder on my Desktop and will 'print-to-file' these pages for a reference catalogue of tested working tutorials.
Keep them coming !

I have been trying to do a better job of fine tuning colour and tone/exp and getting it away from Gimp coz that is where the only real 8bit limitations kick in. Never been too keen on the darktable tools for this but I have just been experimenting with the tonecurves tool thanks to this blog. I find his results are a little heavy handed but the process is certainly effective.

The darktable blog does have some good articles! I've found this one quite useful:

Lowering contrast in gimp
GIMP - Creating a Contrast Mask
This is quite an old tutorial -- does anyone have a better/ more modern approach?
