E-6 is surprisingly expensive just for the chemicals. I wonder how many rolls it would take to make self-developing cheaper than my current $15 a roll (where the shop sends the film out). I could mail out the film myself for cheaper... but I hate mailing things

It depends on how you process. If you save up rolls before you open and mix, so you don’t have to worry about chemical going bad from sitting, then the Arista 1qt kit gets you 8+ rolls for $35, or less than $4.50 a roll. However you don’t have the gear, so you would need $35 for a tank and reels, $15-20 for a good thermometer, then a bunch of metric measuring cup, and a cheap tub to pour hot water in to heat the chems.
In all, probably $80 plus the chemicals. At $15 a roll, including the chemicals as a fixed cost, the other $10 per roll would pay off all the other stuff after 8-10 rolls.
