I put this in "post your photos" but figured I'd share here, with the hopes we start more strobist discussion amongst us.
I recently finished redoing the floor on my back porch. (It was painted dark green, hardly a good color for any sort of studio work)
So now it's got a new floor that looks like hardwood, and voila I've got a studio space in my home. It's only usable for 3 seasons because it's unheated but I plan on putting electric outlets out there by next winter, then I could have some sort of space heater for times where it might be used when it's cold.
It's 9' x 17'. So here's some shots.
Strobist setup: Vivitar 285HV at 1/4 power shooting into an umbrella to the left of the camera, angled down quite a bit so the spill onto the background.
Also one 285HV at 1/16 under the posing stool pointed at the background. My only gripe about the 285HV's is the jump from 1/16 to 1/4 - but I've got a few 283's with vari-power adapters that work when I need finer control.
And another -
285HV shooting through a homemade diffuser (about 2' x 3') to the boy's right, don't remember the power.
+ a 285HV with a homemade snoot wrap on it behind the subject to the left of the camera.
Also - both backgrounds are homemade. 6'x9' canvas drop cloths at Home Depot or Wal-mart are $10. You can get 9' x 12' ones for $30, but they're actually made of two 6'x9' pieces sewn together, the seam is the bitch there. (If it were seamless it would be the perfect cheap solution for us poor saps who don't have a ton of cash lying around to throw into backgrounds)
EDIT: one flash triggered with Cactus V4, the other tripped wth an optical slave. Very reliable combination in a small studio space such as mine. Also, FYI every misfire I've had with the V4's have been due to me accidentally turning the thumb wheel one notch, thus upping the shutter speed to 1/200s and preventing the trigger from firing.
