noticed this morning shots with the k200d on raw + 2mp jpeg, that there is a marked difference in the exposures, the raw images are much darker; was using a k30mm 2.8 lens at f8, iso 250 and dynamic range on, everything manual, and using my lcd to check exposure, is this common with the camera ? with my k5 there is so little difference in exposure or image quality that i never even think about it. just wondering , dave

How You compare them? And what are Your settings for jpg's? Usually there is some parameters for jpg output.

You know, I've never actually compared. I started shooting with dng only from day one, and done the jpg conversion myself. Since the raw is just a sensor dump, and the jpeg is processed in camera, I'm guessing the camera processes brighter?
Were you asking out of curiosity, or do you have concerns? If the latter, I'd say don't worry about it at all - there's far more data in the raw than in the jpeg, and whatever the camera could do, you could possibly tweak better.

just surprised at the difference i guess, yes, jpegs a lot brighter, have to experiment more; using PEF though for the raw files. just wondering about checking exposure on the lcd i guess, if it is different for raw only or jpeg only, i usually shoot jpeg.

later : actually when i open the images in pentax camera utility , the exposures are the same basically, i guess when i first downloaded them into the windows picture viewer program is where the raw images are different.

The JPEG image derives from the raw off the sensor, so there's processing involved before you see it. And you cannot directly see a raw image before it's demosaiced and processed into visibility. So both the "raw" that you can see and JPEG are the results of some kind of processing, not so surprising there would be visible differences.

The main difference is due to the dynamic range and contrast setting, it is applied only to the jpeg and in the case of RAW it is appended to the exif so when you process the RAW in Pentax Camera Utility it applies those settings to the image extracted from the RAW, that is why you do not see the difference there, when you view it anywhere else, those settings are ignored and you see the unprocessed RAW image and hence the difference you saw.

If you have the dynamic range expansion option switched on then the camera will underexpose by one stop (which you'll see in the RAW) and then boost the jpeg by one stop, so the jpeg will be brighter. That's why I switched the DR expansion off, as I always post-process on the computer and I don't want to have to manually boost exposure a stop every time.

@ Jonathan Mac
You are right, but just a small modification to your stating (you probably know it yourself and wanted to keep the answer short):
The camera doesn't "boost" the jpeg by one stop. It does change the gradation curve in a way that the darkest parts are boosted by one stop, but the "boosting" is declining up to the lightest parts, which are not boosted at all.
So DR expansion can prevent blowing highlights, but may increase noise in dark parts of a picture.
